India's Biggest Untapped Resource Is Its Waste

Every year, India generates over 350 million tonnes of crop residues and animal manure, along with nearly 60 million tonnes of organic forestry residue and 60 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW). A significant portion of this biomass is not managed efficiently with some of it being burned in open fields, dumped, or left to decompose thereby polluting the air, degrading soils, and releasing greenhouse gases. Biochar — Multipurpose Carbon-rich Material

Biochar is a porous, carbon-rich material produced by pyrolysis which involves heating biomass in an inert, low-oxygen environment. It has got applications in agriculture, landscaping, adsorption, construction, and energy storage. When applied to farmland, it:
